Select an account with administrative privileges, type a password for that account and click Continue. Check the Show more restore points checkbox, select an earlier working state from the list and press Next.

Once System Protection is turned off, all Restore Points are removed and without a good backup anyway not recoverable. Turning it back on just starts things over from that point forward.
